A key factor in NetSuite’s success from day one was the company’s overall goal. NetSuite was built to run a business. The suite includes many exceptional capabilities, built in from the ground up, including: pure cloud architecture; built-in business intelligence; customization framework; electronic commerce; and more. All of these capabilities are amazing, but its core mission, software built to run a business, has always been a subtle misunderstood differentiator.

It’s amazing how many other competing products started with a different approach. That approach was not running a business. They were created to run a sales force, a production plant, a warehouse, an HR team, or the accounts. Then outside of this main purpose, many years later, other functions where shoes were later put on, were built on foundations that did not fit their purpose. As a result, you get a manufactured product that is trying to support the service industry and vice versa. It could function functionally, but users will enjoy creating work orders, work centers and parts, Capture general-purpose and WIP manufacturing terminology and concepts to run a software installation project. The same can be said for a distribution company using functionality built to support the financial services industry. Eventually it might work, but it will feel like pushing a rock up an endless muddy hill. Companies will always spend customizing it to try to make it work. All they end up with is an unsupported system, which no one understands; no one likes, and hardly gets the job done. NetSuite was built to run product and service-based businesses from the ground up. Regardless of the business, it provides the terminology, workflows, and reports required for that type of business.
